The University of Aberdeen has a 100-year history of ground-breaking science in nutrition and health, principally led by researchers within the Rowett Institute. Obesity is one of the greatest public health challenges of the 21st century, and this new position will support a research grant, funded by the Medical Research Council. The cross-disciplinary research project brings together experienced researchers with facilities for controlled nutrition studies, to apply advanced mechanistic techniques including stable isotope tracers, endocrine and molecular bio-markers and imaging to examine how negative energy balance affects adipose tissue metabolism and metabolic health. The research project will examine the role of sex and age in a controlled diet study, to assess role of sex hormones as modulators of fat loss during negative energy balance. This research has the potential to significantly improve the future management of obesity and metabolic function, particularly to support women’s health.
A Research Fellow is sought to join her team, to support an ambitious and timely research project which includes a diet intervention study to be conducted in the Human Intervention Studies Unit within the Rowett Institute. The research will focus on key research question , on how age and biological sex influence the health benefits of caloric restriction.

You will have a PhD in Human Nutrition or in a relevant human health area. Particular skills and experience required include experience in conducting a diet-approach human intervention study, from ethics through to data reporting, working in a research team, managing a study master file and presenting research at local and national meetings. The successful candidate will be required to function as an outstanding post-doctoral fellow, running an independent project, leading to publications and presentations. The successful candidate will also be required to supervise more junior laboratory members. The position is funded through a MRC project grant award, and involves collaboration with colleagues at the University of Edinburgh.
