This 3.5 year project is fully funded. The successful candidate will receive an annual tax free stipend (depending on circumstance) set at the UKRI rate (£19,237 for 2024/25). We expect the stipend to increase each year. Tuition fees will also be paid. Home students are eligible. The start date is September 2025.
A funded PhD studentship is available in the field of computational inorganic chemistry. The project will involve modelling covalent bonding in crystalline solids to design next-generation electronic materials.
Quantum materials possess remarkable macroscopic properties that come from their electrons; the quantum phenomena are therefore fundamentally connected to chemical structure and bonding. Examples of quantum materials include superconductors, topological materials, and graphene derivatives. In this project we will understand the electronic relationships between molecular and crystalline compounds and use that understanding to develop better materials for quantum technology. This research area is highly interdisciplinary, and we anticipate opportunities to work closely with experimental and theoretical scientists from chemistry and physics. Prior experience in computational chemistry is desirable but not necessary. This position is fully funded for UK home students.
Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2.1 honours degree or a master’s (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering related discipline.
