The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized public comprehensive university in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located at the west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The Department of History of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for a ten-month contract in the position of Visiting Instructor of History. Areas of specialization are open, but preference will be given to applicants with teaching experience in the history of mainland China and Macao, which is relevant for the course “Macau and Chinese Civilization”. This course is a component of the University’s General Education programme. Ability to teach this course in both English and Chinese languages will be an asset. The Department of History, which offers Bachelor, Master, and PhD programmes in History, has a diverse student body drawn from Macao, mainland China, and other parts of the world.
Qualifications
Applicant must possess a MA degree in History or a closely related discipline although a PhD degree in a relevant area is highly preferable. Applicants should have extensive experience teaching history at university level. Applicants should be able to teach in both English and Chinese languages, especially to teach general education courses.
The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2025.
Remuneration
A taxable monthly remuneration from MOP39,950 (USD1 approx. = MOP8) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% – 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
