Professorship for Material Analysis and Conservation Research

The Leibniz Centre for Archaeology (LEIZA) is a globally active archaeological research institute and museum of the Leibniz Association with its headquarters in Mainz and three further locations in Neuwied, Mayen and Schleswig. Since its foundation in 1852, it has been dedicated to researching material remains from around 3 million years of human history with the aim of understanding human behavior as well as the development and change of societies. As a Leibniz research museum, the transfer of knowledge through publications, events, exhibitions and educational programs is a central component of LEIZA’s work program. 

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Faculty of History, together with the Leibniz Centre for Archaeology, Mainz (LEIZA), is seeking to fill a 

W3 Professorship (M/F/D) for Material Analysis and Conservation Research 

at the Institute of Archaeological Studies at the Faculty of History in conjunction with the management of the Department of Restoration, Conservation and Material Analysis at the LEIZA. 

The appointment is based on the Jülicher model; the teaching obligation at Ruhr Universität is 2 SWS. The appointment requirements according to § 36 ff. NRW Higher Education Act must be fulfilled. 

The professorship represents the field of materials analysis and conservation research, taking into account multidisciplinary approaches in research and teaching and should work across epochs as well as comparatively. The professorship will lead the Department of Restoration, Conservation and Material Analysis at LEIZA and be a member of the Extended Board of Directors at the LEIZA. 

What we expect:

• We are looking for a candidate (M/F/D) who can demonstrate above-average scientific qualifications in national and international research contexts and who can demonstrate the ability to teach using innovative concepts. A focus in the field of materials analysis and/or conservation research is required and must be demonstrated through a convincing concept for future activities at LEIZA and RUB which must be submitted as part of the application.
• The post holder will be responsible for advancing the content-related and strategic development of the LEIZA laboratories and their international position, especially through close cooperation with the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum (DBM) (especially in the field of laboratories). Central tasks include the implementation of the LEIZA research agenda, participation in collaborative research initiatives and applications for third-party funding relating to the main research fields of LEIZA and the Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
• As Head of the Restoration, Conservation and Material Analysis competence area, the post holder will be responsible for the further development of the competence area’s research projects within the framework of the LEIZA research fields and permanent research areas. In this role, we also expect the candidate to contribute to the strategic development of LEIZA, to be involved in knowledge transfer and to take on tasks in the field of science management at the Leibniz Institute.
• The professorship is to cover its subject area in teaching at the Ruhr Universität in the relevant degree programs within the faculty with a teaching load of two hours per week. In addition, they will participate in the further development of the courses offered. The willingness and ability to teach in both German and English is expected. 

Requirements:

• In addition to the general requirements under civil service law, applicants must fulfill the recruitment requirements set out in § 36 ff. of the NRW Higher Education Act
• In addition to a relevant doctorate, outstanding academic achievements must be demonstrated
• Willingness and proven ability to acquire externally funded research projects
• Experience in implementing research projects
• Special pedagogical aptitude and academic teaching experience
