The School of Psychological Sciences at Birkbeck, University of London aims to recruit an Associate Lecturer to deliver the module Learning, Memory and Cognition this Summer 2025.

As Associate Lecturer A you will teach the following module:

This module introduces research into learning, memory and cognition. It takes a historical perspective and identifies theoretical and methodological issues in the field. The module starts with a history of learning, memory and cognition and then continues on to psychological concepts and research into learning, memory, reasoning, problem solving and decision making. Full materials for all lectures will be provided.

Your role will be to deliver teaching to Birkbeck students, in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully, and to undertake all related course administrative duties as required.

Your main responsibility will be preparation, teaching, administration and assessment (i.e. marking) of the Learning, Memory and Cognition module, which is a Level 7 module offered as a compulsory part of our BPS-accredited MSc Psychology.

Further to the person specification, additional essential requirements for this role are:

  • A first degree in Psychology or an equivalent relevant qualification.
  • Awareness of the needs of part-time adult learners and ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn.
  • Confident presentation skills and ability to clearly and effectively pass on specialist subject area knowledge.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, to convey both simple and more complex information and academic concepts.

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £68.13 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract:

Fixed term, three month contract April - July 2025. Teaching Wednesday afternoons 2pm – 5pm in the Summer term. Closing date: Friday 28 February 2025. Interview date: Monday 10 Mary 2025.
