Ad Astra Fellow - Assistant Professor in Renewable Offshore Engineering Systems

University College Dublin – School of Civil Engineering

Applications are invited for an Ad-Astra Lecturer/Assistant Professor (above the bar) role in Offshore Renewable Energy, with a focus on geotechnical or hydraulic engineering, within the School of Civil Engineering at University College Dublin (UCD).  The School is seeking applications from candidates with a sustained record of high-quality peer-reviewed research in this area.

The School of Civil Engineering is a research-driven school with a clear focus on delivering excellent research and education. It is an internationally recognised centre for excellence for its research and teaching, ranked in the global top 150 for ‘Civil and Structural Engineering’ (QS Global Rankings), ranking number 1 in Ireland.  The School is part of the UCD College of Engineering and Architecture, which was recently awarded a renewal of Athena SWAN bronze award, for its shared commitment to ensuring that faculty, staff and students experience an equal, diverse and inclusive environment.

The School has world-leading researchers in its two research centres, the Centre for Critical Infrastructure Research (CCIR), and the Dooge Centre for Water Resources Research (CWRR).  The successful candidate will join and take a leadership role across CWRR and CCIR to advance the School’s research in implementing offshore renewable energy technologies.  Sustainable development of renewable energy in EU member states is essential for achieving energy security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and addressing climate change. Ireland's maritime area spans 490,000 km2 and holds significant potential for offshore renewable energy from wind, wave, and tidal sources. Ireland aims to generate 80% of its electricity from renewable sources, as outlined in its Climate Action Plan 2024.  As the offshore renewable energy sector in Ireland continues to grow, it is essential to enhance our understanding of many aspects of this resource from a civil engineering perspective. Some example areas requiring further research include: developing offshore site investigation tools; characterising seabed sediments; exploring various offshore mooring and anchoring systems for floating wind; understanding hydrodynamic loads on offshore renewable energy structures; utilising AI and digitisation in wind and wave forecasting; exploring georisk mitigation strategies for safe and sustainable engineering in offshore environments.
