Ad Astra Fellow - Assistant Professor of Ecosystem Restoration

University College Dublin – School of Biology and Environmental Science

This post addresses the need the need to intensify restoration research to halt the degradation of ecosystems and restore and protect natural environments to ensure sustainability of the many goods and services we all depend on, including resilience to climate change and natural disasters. Challenging restoration targets are set within the new EU Nature Restoration law and compliment the goals of the United Nations declaration on the “Decade on Ecosystem Restoration” spanning 2021-2030.

The School of Biology and Environmental Science seeks a faculty member in nature/ecosystem restoration to undertake cutting-edge research that will provide equitable and effective solutions to pressing sustainability challenges posed by the aforementioned and other legislation and policy goals. The post will see the development of a research group delivering outputs to support restoration practice and policy as priority areas. It will complement our existing research expertise on terrestrial, wetland, marine and freshwater systems, and position the School to target large funding initiatives. The research could encompass nature-based solutions, rewilding, determining baselines and detecting change over time, as well as development and evaluation of methods for effective, economically viable, and equitable restoration of ecosystems that are diverse, resilient, and adaptive to climate change, and other environmental and human impacts. This post could focus on any ecosystem but should work at multiple ecological scales, incorporating where relevant experimental, observational and demonstration project approaches as well as suitable digital and new technologies that can enhance ecological sensing to detect and inform achievement of measurable benefits. Integration of socio-economic factors and stakeholder engagement are also essential for successful restoration projects.
