Ad Astra Fellow - Assistant Professor in Computer Science in the area of Human AI Collaboration

University College Dublin – School of Computer Science

The UCD School of Computer Science is seeking to recruit an assistant professor in the area of Human AI Collaboration. With the advent of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and, especially, Large Language Models (LLMs) there is a great debate in academia, industry and society about the extent to which Artificial Intelligence (AI) may equal or surpass Human Intelligence. This debate informs our understanding of the differences between Human Intelligence and AI and also informs research on Human AI Collaboration. As AI increasingly supports humans in performing different tasks, from improving medical diagnostics to vehicle navigation, harnessing the strategic partnership between human intelligence and AI technology is crucial.

Candidates for this post should have research expertise on supporting the collaboration between humans and AI and/or on applying AI to facilitate and automate activities. Specific areas of interest are as follows:

  • Explainable AI
  • Human computer interaction with AI systems
  • Speech and audio recognition
  • Cybersecurity threat detection and mitigation
  • AI and education
  • Responsible AI

Given the societal implications of new AI tools, applications from candidates with experience on AI Accountability, AI Ethics and Responsible AI will be particularly welcome. This position would be based in the UCD School of Computer Science, a School where research on AI has been their most active research area for many years. The School hosts:

  • Insight: The SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics insight-centre.org
  • ML-Labs: The SFI Centre for Research Training in Machine Learning ml-labs.ie.
  • CeADAR: Ireland’s Centre for AI - an Enterprise Ireland funded centre established to bring the benefits of AI and machine learning to businesses operating in Ireland www.ceadar.ie.
  • UCD Centre for Cybersecurity & Cybercrime Investigation ucd.ie/cci

The School (ucd.ie/cs) has topped the rankings for computer science research in Ireland for many years. The School has over 130 PhD students working on the latest topics in computer science; the majority of these PhDs are working on topics related to AI/ML.
