PhD Studentship: Future Power Modules Design Based on Wide Bandgap Power Semiconductor Devices

University of Nottingham - Engineering

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Nottingham
Funding amount: See advert for details
Hours: Full Time
Placed On: 22nd January 2025
Closes: 7th February 2025

The new emerging silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor transistors demonstrate the potential to push the power converter efficiency and power density to a level never achieved before. They are a promising technology to drive the electric revolution for sustainable transportation and mobility. However, to widely adopt them for industries, there are many challenges yet to overcome. Packaging, integration of these new devices into the power module and power electronics converters requires the research and innovation in methods to effectively satisfy electromagnetic, electro-thermal and thermal-mechanical constraints, which will eventually unlock their potentials to improve the efficiency, power density as well as reliability for future power electronics converters. Applicants are invited to undertake a 3-year PhD programme to tackle these challenges, and the PhD will cover one or a few research areas below:

  • Packaging and integration of SiC, GaN devices
  • Reliability of SiC, GaN devices and power modules
  • Condition monitoring and health management of power modules
  • Electromagnetic compatibility management and design
  • Power electronics virtual prototyping

The research will take place at the Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Institute, University of Nottingham. The PEMC Research Institute is internationally renowned and one of the largest on its field. Comprising nearly 30 academic staff, around 70 Research Fellows and other research staff, over 100 PhD Students, 16 Technicians, and 20 Project Management and Administrative Staff; PEMC delivers high-impact teaching, research, and industrial collaborations.

Excellent candidates will be eligible for partial or full scholarship (stipend and fees). Starting date will be no later than 1st October 2025.

Please send your CV (including publications if apply) and transcripts to Dr Ke Li (ke.li2@Nottingham.ac.uk) before 7th February 2025.
