Leeds Beckett University - School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Location: Leeds
Salary: £29,659 to £33,882 (pro-rata) (Grade 4)
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 21st January 2025

Job Ref: REQ0001834

Part-time (0.4FTE), Fixed term (2 years)

You are invited to apply for the role of Community Recruitment Lead on the Equity in Black Adult Health (EQUITA) research project, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). The key purpose of the role is to facilitate and undertake recruitment of participants to the EQUITA research project.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about the health and wellbeing of the Black community, particularly in Leeds/Yorkshire where this role will be based. You will be working with a diverse team of researchers and practitioners from multiple institutions and community-based organisations, and as a Community Recruitment Lead you will be a key member of the team.

Screening tests for illnesses like breast, bowel and cervical cancer, and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) can save lives. However, individuals from ethnic minority groups, particularly Black African and Caribbean people, have been found to participate less in these screenings. This means that Black African and Caribbean people may be more likely to discover illnesses too late for optimal treatment. We want to improve that. Therefore, we are conducting a research study to investigate a co-designed, faith-placed and peer-led intervention to improve cancer and AAA screening uptake among Black African and Caribbean communities in the UK. The project will recruit people living in the North East of England, Scotland and Leeds.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and approachable individual as Community Recruitment Lead for the Leeds-based study recruitment and data collection. The main purpose of the role is to support the recruitment of research participants in Leeds and the wider Yorkshire area. You will be part of relevant communities and have existing links. The role will involve building and maintaining links with community stakeholders, such as community and religious leaders, to facilitate recruitment of participants to the research project. This role is important to the success of the EQUITA study, as you will be responsible for engaging with potential participants and supporting them through the research recruitment process.

This is a part-time role (2 days per week) for 2 years, starting 1st March 2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter) until 28th February 2027.

The EQUITA project is led by Dr Floor Christie-de Jong (University of Sunderland) and Dr Judith Eberhardt (Teesside University), who can be contacted for an informal chat about the role at floor.christie@sunderland.ac.uk and/or j.eberhardt@tees.ac.uk.

You will be employed by Leeds Beckett University and the role will be managed by Professor Laura Ashley, who is a co-investigator on the EQUITA project. Laura can also be contacted for an informal chat about this post at L.J.Ashley@leedsbeckett.ac.uk.

Closing date: Monday 10th February 2025 (23:59) On occasions where a high volume of applications are received, we may close vacancies early. If you wish to apply for this role, it is recommended that you do so promptly.

Working here means you’ll also have access to a wide range of benefits including our generous pension schemes, excellent holiday entitlements, flexible working, reduced study fees, subsidised fitness facilities and a lot more.

We welcome applications from all individuals and particularly from black and global majority ethnic candidates as members of these groups are currently under-represented at this level of post. All appointments will be based on merit.
