Aircraft are a unique and important source of fine particle emissions, producing particles generally smaller than those from other sectors. These particles contribute to both air pollution and climate change, and their properties are expected to change substantially with the use of alternative fuels, making their understanding a critical challenge in sustainable aviation decisions.
This PhD project will combine computational and experimental approaches to better characterise these emissions and develop an understanding of their evolution. The selected candidate will develop and apply a numerical model to simulate the particle evolution from the engine exhaust, through the plume, to the surrounding atmosphere. Real-world measurements will be integral to calibrating and evaluating the model.
Results of this research will address a key gap in understanding aviation's contribution to air pollution and will also quantify the potential air pollution benefits of alternative fuels, supporting the transition to a more sustainable future for the sector.
Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2.1 and preferably 1st class degree in Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Natural Sciences. Good programming experience/abilities and interest to work in an interdisciplinary research topic are required.
EPSRC DLA studentships are fully-funded (fees and maintenance) for students eligible for Home fees. EU and international students may be considered for a small number of awards at the Home fees rate.
