Research Assistant in Engine Modelling

Oxford Brookes University - Faculty of Technology, Design & Environment

Location: Oxford
Salary: £31,387 rising to £33,882 pro rata
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 20th January 2025
Closes: 27th January 2025
Job Ref: 175579

This is a part time (0.5fte) fixed term role for 14 months.

The Faculty of Health, Science and Technology at Oxford Brookes University has an international reputation for excellence, innovation and creativity. The Propulsion & Pollution Modelling (PPM) Research Group, part of the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics, has been involved in major engine development R&D projects and, in recent years, is increasingly focusing on zero-carbon fuel propulsion.

Thanks to its expertise and established reputation, the PPM Group has been invited to join the existing APC22 Project Cavendish. The large, multi-partner £10m industrial project, led by Phinia/Delphi UK, aims to demonstrate the conversion of a heavy-duty diesel truck engine into a zero-carbon propulsion system fuelled purely by hydrogen. The PPM will develop advanced 3D CFD in-cylinder models to support the optimisation of fuel injection and combustion.

This is a technically-challenging industrial project which requires fast generation of results by OBU – the only academic partner. The PPM Group is currently seeking to expand through recruitment of a part-time Research Assistant. The new researcher will be involved in the development, validation and operation of a new comprehensive modelling protocol, which includes state-of-the-art features such as hybrid hydrogen combustion modelling. The successful candidate will possess specific existing skills and software knowledge to be able to deliver results from the outset.
