Closes: 12th February 2025
Job Ref: MED05034

About the role:

We are seeking a Microbiology Research Technician to support our research to understand the immune responses to bacterial pathogens such as Streptococcus pyogenes (also known as Group A Streptococcus, GAS, or Strep A).

What you would be doing:

You will be supporting research that combines fieldwork to collect samples in the community, hospital samples, and microbiology to contribute to an advanced understanding of non-invasive and invasive Strep A.

You will be based in the group of Professor Shiranee Sriskandan in the Department of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London, primarily at the Charing Cross campus, with fieldwork in school settings and other locations as required.

You will support research that addresses questions on the transmission of Strep A within school settings, and specifically how this may inform public health interventions and policies. You will be expected to perform routine work in the laboratory to help support the research, as well as collect samples in the field. The sampling will also underpin our efforts to discover how children develop immunity to different types of Strep A infection

You will also support the main Infection Bioresource at Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust when not participating in fieldwork, enabling our study of the development of immune responses to bacterial infections (including Strep A) in hospitalised patients.

You will have clear and timely communication with the researchers within the group, with colleagues at UKHSA, and with school staff and younger children. You will attend and actively contribute to relevant workshops, lab meetings, research seminars and conferences at Imperial and within the wider community, including national conferences.

What we are looking for:

  • A Highly motivated candidate with research interests in bacterial infection biology to join our team.
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences or Life Sciences
  • Previous experience of working in a microbiology research laboratory OR diagnostic laboratory
  • Experience of performing research using techniques relevant to bacteriology, host-pathogen interactions, and/or bacterial infection biology.
  • Experience in handling and performing research with Group A Streptococcus or other ACDP2 pathogen.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Form positive relationships with the research group and wider community.

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to contribute to innovation in bacterial infection biology.
  • The opportunity to collaborate with other researchers in  Professor Sriskandan’s research group
  • Participation in the Centre for Bacterial Resistance Biology
  • Membership of an international network of streptococcal researchers
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
