About the role
The Department of Sociology and Criminology is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work with Dr Laura Morosanu on the Leverhulme Trust funded project ‘Pathways to Inclusion: Children of Migrants Navigating “Assaults on Worth”’.
The project examines how migrant-origin youth establish a sense of worth and belonging in professional workplaces in Britain. Instead of documenting negative experiences of racism and exclusion, it breaks new ground by uncovering the factors that positively shape individuals’ sense of worth, helping them feel valued and included in institutional spaces, which crucially impact their careers and place in society. The project originally compares youth of European and non-European background. It aims to provide insight into a ‘new’ and expanding second generation, post-2004 European migrants’ children, who grew up in Brexit and pandemic times, and whose work experiences are largely unknown.
The Research Fellow will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the project, data collection, analysis, and dissemination through co-authored outputs. Specific responsibilities include: preparing the ethical review application, recruiting participants, conducting interviews in London/South England, facilitating a participatory workshop, analysing the data, preparing a pen-portrait album, practitioner toolkit and mini-documentaries, setting up and managing the project website and social media, attending regular meetings on campus, co-organising events, and developing co-authored publications and presentations.
About you
The Research Fellow will have a social science PhD in an area relevant to the project. They will preferably have several years of postdoctoral experience, and extensive expertise in European migration and second-generation integration more generally, demonstrated through high-quality publications. They will be experienced in qualitative research methods, particularly interviews, and ideally creative participatory research. They will have excellent writing, communication, and collaborative skills, experience of engaging with diverse audiences, and disseminating research in various academic and non-academic formats. They will be strongly committed to fostering social justice and inclusion.
