The post

The faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Dr Shaila Afroj. This Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded post is available from 1st March 2025. The successful applicant will work on the project titled “Sustainable wearable e-textiles for remote monitoring of atrial fibrillation patients”. The project aims to create a radical change in bespoke solution processing and manufacturing of sustainable conductive inks and develop next generation environmentally friendly wearable e-textiles, by addressing fundamental scientific challenges that current technologies are facing.

We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our inter-disciplinary research team to contribute to development of sustainable conductive inks that can be inkjet-printed onto surface engineered biodegradable textile substrate. The successful candidate will also be required to integrate printed wearable sensors to collect ECG data remotely in a non-invasive way and evaluate the performance. The successful candidate will carry out the sustainability assessment (biodegradability and life-cycle-analysis (LCA) to estimate environmental impact of developed wearable e-textiles. The team will disseminate research findings through high quality publications in peer-reviewed open access journals, present at international conferences, attend and organise events to share generated knowledge created within and beyond academic circles. Therefore, we are looking for a highly ambitious candidate who is driven, innovate and open for collaboration.

Working in this team will provide the candidate a first-rate opportunity to train as an excellent researcher in interdisciplinary methodologies in a range of fields, skills and experience working in academic and industrial settings. The opportunity will greatly support career progression and development of the candidate.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in electrical and electronic engineering and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. The successful candidate should have experience in designing, assembly and analysis of various kinds of sensors and using design tools. The position would also require experience in sustainability analysis (LCA, biodegradability). The successful candidate will be responsible for undertaking research as part of a multidisciplinary team of academic and industrial collaborator where excellent verbal and written communication skills will be required. A record of high quality, peer-reviewed publications and evidence of contribution to the writing of these publications would be desirable. Also, would be looking for someone with previous experiences of working with wearable sensors.
