Research Fellow (Volcanologist - Hazard and Risk Assessment)

Qualifications and Experience 

The successful candidate must possess at minimum, a PhD from a recognized university, which should be in a relevant aspect of Volcanology, Earth or Social Sciences or a closely related field. 

Candidates should also possess:

• Ideally at least three (3) years’ experience in the use of quantitative risk assessment tools or programmes
• Competence in relevant computer applications, with expertise in GIS and at least one of the following areas:
  • QVAST
  • HASSETT
  • HAZMAP
  • LAHARZ
  • TITAN2D
  • VOLCDAM 

Candidates with the following would have an advantage:

• Postgraduate degree (e.g. MSc/MPhil) or equivalent in Earth Science
• Ideally at least three (3) years’ experience in the use of techniques in the modelling of volcanic hazards and risks
• A good record of research and publications in reputable, peer-reviewed journals
• Knowledge of Expert Elicitation 

The following would be considered assets:

• BSc in Earth Science or relevant physical science subject
• Ideally at least three (3) years’ work experience at a volcano observatory or a similar institute
• Demonstrated experience in leadership and mentoring, including the supervision of postgraduate students in related fields
• Possess relevant skills in scripting and coding
