Senior Library Assistant (Italian) (Part Time)

University of Cambridge - Modern and Medieval Languages and Lingustics Library

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £26,642 to £30,505 (pro rata)
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 14th January 2025
Closes: 2nd February 2025
Job Ref: VY44628

The Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics (MMLL) Library is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person to join our dedicated and professional Library team to deliver a high-quality, inclusive and efficient Library service.

You will be responsible for the Italian collection in the Library and you will liaise with the academic staff who teach and research Italian studies to provide extensive Library support for the courses run by the Faculty. Some knowledge of the Italian language and culture would be a definite advantage for this post. As our new Senior Library Assistant for Italian, you will have a variety of responsibilities: you will order, catalogue, classify, and promote the books and other materials on the reading lists, and you will create and maintain online reading lists using Leganto, our reading list system. You will also train our readers on making the best use of the specialist resources available to them.

You will be expected to contribute to the smooth running of the Library service and offer a great customer service experience, both in person and online. Reporting directly to the MMLL Librarian, you will be involved in supporting the undergraduate and MPhil community in the MMLL Faculty. Additionally, you will have some administrative duties for the Library; in particular, you will be responsible for ensuring all the library's invoices are paid and the Library's credit card is reconciled.

To be considered for this role, you must have experience of working in a library or similar environment. You should have a working knowledge of the Italian language, or the willingness to acquire it; knowledge of any other language would help you in this respect.

You should demonstrate an adaptable and flexible approach to delivering library services/customer services; excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential and you should enjoy working in a small, friendly team. Excellent IT skills are also important for this post, however full training will be given on our library management system, Alma. You will be part of a small and friendly local team as well as a supportive wider team of library staff from across the School of Arts & Humanities libraries network.

This post is part-time, 15 hours per week, to be worked to a fixed pattern across three or more days per week within the Monday - Friday 9am - 5.00pm working hours. There is flexibility in the exact hours worked, and on which days of the week;  the exact pattern will be agreed between the successful candidate and the MMLL Librarian.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates from a BME background for this vacancy as they are currently under-represented at this level in our institution.

We strongly encourage those who are preparing applications to ensure that you provide information about how your experience and skills match each of the essential criteria listed in the Further Information document. We also encourage you to specify your level of knowledge of the Italian language, and/or any other foreign languages you may have.

We welcome informal enquiries about any aspect of the post, application process, or eligibility: please get in touch with Hélène Fernandes, the MMLL Librarian, on hk225@cam.ac.uk or 01223 335014 if you have any queries.

Interviews for this position are expected to take place during the week beginning 10 February 2025.
