The role

The MRC Integrative epidemiology unit (IEU) at the University of Bristol is seeking a talented researcher to join our programme on Mendelian randomisation as either research fellow or senior research associate, depending on past experience. The programme aims to improve causal inference methodology and application to meet the challenges of effectively leveraging the continually growing enormous diversity of data resources that are now becoming available. You will join the programme’s core team comprising two co-leads (George Davey Smith and Gibran Hemani) and a fantastic team of researchers at various career stages. Within Bristol we collaborate closely with the six other programmes within the IEU and also work closely with the CRUK Integrative Cancer Epidemiology Programme, the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and the OpenGWAS team. We have strong external collaborations with international industry and academic partners and the successful candidate will have opportunities to build their research network through these collaborations.

What will you be doing?

You will lead on the delivery of one of the key work packages within the programme (Research fellow level, grade K) or contribute to key research objectives within one or more work packages (Senior research associate level, grade J). You will be encouraged to contribute towards the forward vision of the programme’s activities and you will be supported to develop your own independence through funding applications on a timescale that suits your trajectory. You will have opportunities to contribute data and software that will be widely disseminated to the broader genetic epidemiology community. Depending on experience you will have supervisory responsibilities for earlier career researchers working in your area.

You should apply if

  • You have extensive research experience in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, bioinformatics or a related quantitative discipline
  • Evidenced by a good track record, relative to opportunity, of relevant publications
  • You have a firm grasp of Mendelian randomization
  • You have strong statistical, data management, computational and writing skills
  • You are a good team worker with an interest in contributing to and driving larger collaborative projects
  • (Grade K) You have experience supervising research activities
  • (Grade K) You have evidence of winning funding for relevant research activities
