An exciting opportunity has arisen for a minerals geologist based at the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland (GSNI). The role will provide highly effective operational and policy support for the provision of guidance and advice on Northern Ireland mineral development to the Minerals and Petroleum Branch (MAPB) of the Department for the Economy (DfE)

Main duties and responsibilities include (full list on the recruitment portal):

  • Provide operational support to GSNI minerals geologist on minerals licensing and projects.
  • Lead and maintain the quarry aggregate resource information collected by DfE
  • GIS capture, collation and management of archived exploration data to develop minerals prospectivity reports using the archive and recent exploration results to support the priorities of DfE
  • Work with British BGS colleagues on UK critical minerals to identify gaps in national critical raw materials research.
  • Work with Irish government officials on related cross border critical mineral interests.
  • Identify and develop areas of research relevant to GSNI’s Science Strategy and work programme.
  • Irregular hours including evening, weekend and other out-of-hours working will be a component of the post at times, plus a requirement for travel

Essential

  • Minimum 2.1 Honours Geology degree (S)
  • A PhD in Minerals geology or MSc (geology, economic geology, exploration geology, geochemistry, environmental geology) plus relevant work experience in minerals sector. (You may also apply if you will have submitted your PhD thesis by the end of December 2024 or if you have a first degree in a relevant discipline and evidence of relevant professional experience in the minerals sector (S)
  • Evidence of significant postgraduate experience in a relevant role which includes the use of GIS software (ArcGIS/QGIS/MapInfo) (S&I)
  • Evidence of knowledge of mineral systems and economic mineral deposits. (S&I)
  • Confidence in engaging with government officials, industry and academic stakeholders with clarity, integrity and enthusiasm (S&I)
  • A willingness to travel within the UK and internationally if required(I) in addition to a Full Driving Licence (travel is required within the role that is not always accessible by public transport)

  • Ability to work unsupervised, organised, flexible and contribute to a team with a task completion focus(I)
  • You will be committed to a diverse and inclusive approach to work in the geosciences (S&I)

Desirable

  • Experience in base metal mineral exploration, programme design and interpretation of exploration results (with focus on geochemistry and geophysics) (S&I)
  • Understanding of national & international critical mineral issues with knowledge of Northern Ireland geology and mineral potential (I)
  • Python programming knowledge (S&I)
