Background
The post-holder will work in the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery (GSU), which improves surgical outcomes thorough collaborative research.
This post is part of a new National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funded grant to deliver research activities to make surgery in the NHS more sustainable.
Led by Prof. Aneel Bhangu, NIHR Group on Carbon Reduced Operating Theatres is a 4 year project led by the University of Birmingham in collaboration with colleagues from across the UK.
Operating theatres contribute one quarter of a hospital's carbon footprint. The UK government wants the NHS to reach a "net-zero" carbon footprint by 2045. This cannot happen without patients and researchers working together to make surgery environmentally friendly. However, it is challenging to change behaviours of staff in theatres, largely because of safety concerns. This programme will be a major step towards safely introducing net-zero healthcare. It will create new knowledge that can be shared across the NHS.
