Background
We are seeking a Post-doctoral Research Fellow to work in Dr Davor Pavlovic’s laboratory. The project is focused on studying the mechanisms driving the early chronic kidney disease associated cardiomyopathy and investigating the novel treatment options. The work is funded by the British Heart Foundation. A key aim of this project is to investigate whether early treatment can prevent or reduce the cardiac disease progression.
The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, managing, executing and analysing experiments, and ensuring that key deliverables are met. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with other members of the Translational Research Cluster on Heart Failure and Arrhythmias and the Birmingham Cardiorenal Group. The post-holder will also be encouraged and supported to apply for fellowships in the cardiovascular field and to develop their independent scientific career.
Main Responsibilities
- Work within specified research grants and projects and contribute to writing of the research proposals.
- Operate within areas of cardiovascular pathophysiology, electrophysiology or -omics technologies.
- Analyse and interpret research findings and results. Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines.
- Disseminate findings from research to specialist and lay audiences (incl. writing scientific publications).
- Contribute to the writing of grant proposals and funding applications to secure resources for ongoing and future research.
- Contribute to the public understanding and visibility of the discipline through publications, presentations, and outreach activities.
- Perform experiments (this may require working weekends at times).
- Apply specialized knowledge in cardiac pathophysiology, electrophysiology, molecular biology and various omics approaches to develop new intellectual understandings in the field.
- Disseminate research findings through publications, seminars, and other relevant platforms to share advancements with the scientific community.
- Supervise and provide guidance to students engaged in research work, and mentor PhD students in areas relevant to the project.
- Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required.
Person Specification
- Essential: Possession of a first degree and a PhD (or near to completion) in cell biology, biomedical sciences, genetics, or a closely related field, demonstrating deep expertise in at least one of the techniques: cardiovascular physiology, cell biology, electrophysiology and omics technologies).
- Knowledge of the cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology.
- Desirable: Possession of a home office personal license for work on small animals.
- Desirable: Experience of working with in vivo murine disease models and experience of single cell patch clamping techniques.
- Desirable: Proficient skills in the molecular characterisation of disease models, by proteomics or RNAseq.
- High-level analytical capability, with a proven track record of problem-solving in complex research environments.
- Open-minded and team-oriented, with a readiness to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
