An Institute of Technology (IoT) is an exciting place to gain top-quality training and qualifications in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM)-based subjects. Located across England, IoTs are a national network of partnerships between local colleges, universities, and leading employers. Backed by a £290 million government investment, IoTs deliver the very best in technical education.
The Greater Birmingham and Solihull Institute of Technology (GBSIoT) partnership is led by Solihull College and University Centre, alongside core partners Birmingham City University, South and City College Birmingham and Aston University, supported by Birmingham Metropolitan College, University of Birmingham, and University College Birmingham.
We wish to recruit a Short-Term Engineering Placement (STEP) student who will have the opportunity to use their technical skills to support the development and delivery of teaching and learning at the Hub. The GBSIoT Hub Factory is the largest learner factory in Europe and regularly hosts visits and classes for staff and students (generally +16 years) from around the partnership. Aiming to inspire and educate the next generation of engineers, this placement will suit someone who is considering a future in teaching or who enjoys facilitating outreach activities.
The successful candidate will develop existing and emerging teaching material, demonstrate the operation of the factory to visitors and student groups whilst facilitating exciting industrially relevant student projects. During their training they will learn about the ways that learner factories are used to develop skills, then go on to help newcomers to use, design, implement and maintain industry 4.0 technologies primarily for the manufacturing sector.
Candidates should be coming to the end of their degree and be able to start the placement fulltime in January 2025. The placement can last from 18-24 weeks, depending on their degree requirements, and can be paid until the end of March 2025. Candidates will need to be enrolled on a degree level course in the UK. They must also have right to work in the UK that is not time limited and does not require sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route either at the start of the scheme or on completion.
Solihull College & University Centre is committed to ensuring a safe environment for all students and expects all staff to engage fully with this commitment.
