Hours: Part Time

Job description:

You will support the University of Sheffield’s Bioarchaeology team with delivering SHEFF BIOARCH, a project to enhance and expand access to our internationally important archaeobotanical and zooarchaeological collections. The project will contribute to a national network of bioarchaeological collections in partnership with the University of Aberdeen and Historic England (Portsmouth). It is funded through the Research Infrastructure for Conservation and Heritage Science (RICHeS) scheme led by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

You will be responsible for enhancing the zooarchaeological collection, including expansion, storage and documentation, and facilitate its use by external researchers and the wider public. You will build relationships with external users by preparing documentation, bespoke training and through promotion of the collection across professional networks. You will liaise with the RICHeS programme, and work closely with our national partners at the University of Aberdeen and Historic England, including undertaking periods of training and professional exchange with the partners.

The post is based together with the collection in the university’s newly established Archaeology and Heritage Science Facility, in the School of Biosciences. You will work alongside the established technical team and liaise closely with the team to ensure the delivery of SHEFF BIOARCH aligns with the facility’s strategic aims and core purposes in education and research.

Applicants must have experience to a Level 7 qualification (Masters level) in Archaeology or a subject relevant to the post, with proven vocational skills in line with the job description along with a deep and systemic knowledge of zooarchaeological research and animal taxonomy, including practical experience using zooarchaeology reference collections. Experience in the preparation of zooarchaeological skeleton specimens, including following appropriate health and safety procedures is also essential.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
