Description of Post

Heads of Department are key members of academic management, responsible for the efficient and effective management of the Department, its academic programmes and resources. 

A new Department of Engineering Apprenticeships is being created in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology in ATU Donegal in response to the Government Action Plan for Apprenticeship (2021/25) and the growing demand for apprenticeships. ATU Donegal is expanding its provision and investing in additional capacity under the capital fund currently being rolled out by SOLAS/HEA.

This Head of Department will lead and develop the new Department of Engineering Apprenticeships which will include the apprenticeship trades of Electrical Engineering, Metal Fabrication and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. This department may include additional apprenticeship/work-based learning programs in the future. The successful candidate will project manage the rollout out of the expansion of the apprenticeship provision.

The post holder will manage a team of academic and technical staff.

While the post holder will be based on the Letterkenny Campus, they will also be expected to be available to work on the Killybegs campus as required.

Essential Qualifications

The successful applicant must hold:

  • A relevant first or second class Honours degree in an Engineering, Construction or related discipline from a recognized awarding authority;
  • Minimum of five years relevant and acceptable experience in an Engineering, Construction or related discipline subsequent to obtaining the qualifications referred to above
  • Applicants must have the necessary technical and administrative expertise to lead and manage professional teams to develop and deliver relevant programmes of study which respond to the needs of students, industry and the wider community.

Desirable

  • An appropriate level 9 or equivalent qualification.
  • An understanding of the Apprentice sector in Ireland
  • Experience of designing, developing and implementing engineering facilities including engineering workshops.
  • Education or industry-based experience, including proven competence in a management or leadership role
  • Have experience of establishing, maintaining and supporting appropriate linkages with business, industry, education and training providers.
  • A knowledge of quality assurance issues and procedures within the educational context.
  • Experience of budget management.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills
  • Experience of diverse modes of course delivery.
  • Good working knowledge of Health & Safety in the workplace.
