Associate/Assistant Professor in Artificial Intelligence

The University of Macau (UM) is an internationalized public comprehensive university in the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) located at the west bank of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). It may be noted that English is the working language and the primary medium of instruction at UM. 

The Department of Computer and Information Science (CIS) of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) invites applications for the position of Full/ Associate/Assistant Professor in Artificial Intelligence. It will be a joint position with the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) of the Institute of Collaborative Innovation (ICI). This position intends to complement and strengthen existing staff expertise. We are seeking candidate with a proven track record in scientific research, an innovative research vision, and a commitment to education.             

FST is the oldest and one of the most vibrant faculties at UM, dedicated to student-centric education and cutting-edge research in engineering and science. UM is among the top 1% in Essential Sciences Indicators (ESI) rankings in both Engineering and Computer Science. In the THE World University Ranks, the Engineering programme is ranked among the 126th – 150th and the Computer Science programme is among the top 175, arising from its status of a local community college in less than 10 years. CIS, where the position is to be hosted, was founded in 1990 and currently has 36 academic staff. The Department offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degree programmes, which cover the main aspects of modern computer science and related technologies. CIS has equipped fifteen laboratories with advanced facilities and rich software tools for its students and academic staff to develop their course projects, final year projects and R&D projects. The programmes have extensive collaboration with other institutes around the world. 

CAIR under ICI focuses on research on computational algorithms, vision and pattern recognition, natural language processing (NLP), human-computer communication, autonomous driving and intelligent robotics, which play a vital role in the development of Macao's smart city. UM established the Joint Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics with the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and further developed the UM branch of the national Super Intelligent Computing Centre in Hengqin. CAIR's core research areas include five main research directions: AI health, Human-computer interaction (HCI), Robotics, Metaverse and Computer Graphics. 

Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Computer Science or related areas.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with specializations in AI for Science, or application of AI to interdisciplinary areas.
  • Strong background in Computer Science or related disciplines, and extensive research and teaching experience at the tertiary education level.
  • Good team player for participating in various aspects of the activities of the department, faculty, and university and serving the profession. 

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2025. 

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP1,250,200 (approx. USD154,350) for the position of Full Professor, MOP1,052,800 (approx. USD129,980) for the position of Associate Professor and MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) for the position of Assistant Professor will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
