About The Role

Fixed term contract: Up to 31 July 2025

The ALPHA collaboration at CERN synthesises and traps antihydrogen for precision tests of fundamental symmetry. The collaboration is world leading in precision spectroscopy of antihydrogen and has recently made a first study of the influence of gravity on antihydrogen. A major upgrade programme is under way with the aim to achieve or surpass the precision of spectroscopy in ordinary hydrogen. Swansea University is founding member and a major stakeholder in the collaboration. The successful candidate will join the Swansea team at CERN and will become a full member of the ALPHA collaboration.

The candidate will be responsible for finalising the integration of our Be+ assisted antihydrogen accumulation system with both the spectroscopy and the gravity setup, and will participate in the development of novel magnetometry, thermometry and rf field strength measurements using laser-cooled Be+ ions. In addition the candidate will participate fully in and contribute to the overall physics programme of the ALPHA experiment at CERN.
