This full-time post is available from April 2025 on a permanent basis and offers the opportunity for hybrid working – some time on-campus and some from home. We also welcome applications from those looking for less than full time hours.
We seek to appoint a forward-looking and highly committed individual to become Professor of Data Science in Applied Health (E&R). The successful candidate will combine strong academic research and education with a track record of strategic leadership and collaborative engagement. They will have a demonstrable international research profile, which could include expertise in data science, operational research, artificial intelligence/machine learning and related fields applied to health. Applicants will be innovative researchers with a strong track record of research funding and international quality publications.
The successful candidate will be expected to engage with and lead on opportunities to develop research & education in data science applied to health and healthcare. They will build on the University of Exeter’s strengths in this area both within PenCHORD and IDSAI and across the wider University through their outstanding research, and educational expertise.
The successful candidate will be tasked with contributing to the strategic development of PenCHORD and to extending PenCHORD’s national and international reputation as a highly impactful research and education group (including our renowned Health Service Modelling Associates programme: https://arc-swp.nihr.ac.uk/training-type/health-service-modelling-associates-programme-hsma/ ) and providing a broad leadership role in health data science on behalf of the Medical School.
Working closely with the University of Exeter Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (IDSAI), the successful candidate will contribute to the strategic leadership of PenCHORD (the Peninsula Collaboration for Health Operational Research and Data Science) and the advancement of their innovative, groundbreaking research and education and provide senior leadership in health data science across the University of Exeter Medical School.
PenCHORD sits within the NIHR funded South West Peninsula Applied Research Collaboration (PenARC https://arc-swp.nihr.ac.uk/ ) PenARC is one of 15 ARCs across England, part of an £150 million investment by the NIHR to improve the health and care of patients and the public. PenCHORD works with health & social care practitioners, commissioners and patients to help them make informed decisions about improving services and outcomes for patients. The team uses advanced quantitative techniques to model healthcare services and predict the impact of change.
The team work closely with University of Exeter IDSAI which provides a hub for data-intensive science and AI activity within the University and the wider region. Its vision is to develop innovative approaches to the use of data & artificial intelligence in modern society, covering the entire spectrum from collection through interrogation and analysis, to interpretation, visualisation and communication. The Institute is a step change in the University of Exeter’s data analytic capabilities enabling cutting-edge fundamental research, driving new collaborations and creating transformative impact. The University of Exeter is a member of the Turing University Networking and hosts 11 Turing Fellows & one Turing AI Fellow. Exeter is well equipped with its own super-computer capacity and is a partner in the GW4 Isambard 2 super-computer homed in Bristol, shortly to be replaced by the even more powerful Isambard 3, which will be a World ‘top 500’ machine. In addition, we play a lead role in local NHS health data infrastructure including working closely with the South-West Secure Data environment.
