The role

The Research Technician will join a dynamic team of virologists studying coronavirus replication (using reverse genetics to generate recombinant SARS-CoV-2 viruses) and dengue virus host-protein interactions. The role consists of fully supporting research laboratory activities, ensuring that the laboratories are prepared for experimentation and are compliant with relevant Health and Safety and other legislative or policy requirements.  You will also carry out specialised techniques and train others in these and essential core functions.

What will you be doing?

The main laboratory activities will be mammalian cell culture, virus growth and assay, general molecular biology techniques (including nucleic acid isolation, PCR/qRT-PCR, cloning, plasmid isolation, in vitro RNA synthesis, transfection) and protein analysis (including immunodetection and Western blotting). 

The work will be conducted at CL-2 and CL-3 containment levels, after appropriate training, and it will require handling of infectious SARS-CoV-2 and dengue viruses. You will also oversee laboratory record keeping through the centralised electronic repository of the lab and liaise with the PI for laboratory purchases.

You should apply if

Essential experience includes hands-on experience in laboratory techniques including mammalian cell culture and general molecular biology techniques, nucleic acid and protein detection, proficiency in laboratory calculations, good IT skills and experience in using standard software, excellent organisational abilities, and a commitment to accuracy and efficiency. Desirable experience includes previous experience working at CL-3 containment level and expertise in the propagation and assay of viruses.
