The role

The postholder will be part of the ’Behavioural and qualitative science’ cross-cutting methodology theme of the National Institute for Health and Care Research Applied Research Collaboration West (NIHR ARC West) https://arc-w.nihr.ac.uk/. ARC West brings together local Universities, NHS organisations, local authorities, and patients/members of the public to tackle health inequities and the pressing issues for health, public health and social care systems and communities.  The post will be based at University of Bristol and funding is available for 15 months in the first instance. The appointed researcher will work on several research projects, supported, and supervised by Dr Jon Banks who co-leads ARC West’s Behavioural and Qualitative Science team. 

What will you be doing?

The postholder will work across several research projects as part of a team of researchers who will be undertaking methodologically sound, appropriate, robust, and rapid research in the ARC West research priorities of: public health, integrated and optimal care, healthier childhoods, and mental health. This will involve liaising with external collaborators to design and develop high quality qualitative and mixed methods research studies. They will utilise a range of data collection and analytic methods to complete the studies and they may also work with and supervise other members of the behavioural and qualitative science team. The postholder will contribute to the Public and Community Involvement, Engagement and Participation (PCIEP) activities and strategies for projects. They will also contribute to implementation, or knowledge mobilisation, in collaboration with the ARC West research teams, service partners and researchers at partner universities.

Working as part of a team of researchers, the post-holder will design and carry out applied social science research under the supervision of the behavioural and qualitative science team leads Dr Jon Banks, Dr Michelle Farr and Professor Jeremy Horwood.

You should apply if

You have:

  • detailed knowledge and understanding of qualitative methodologies and underlying theory
  • experience of undertaking a range of research projects in the field of health services and public health
  • a higher degree in social sciences or related discipline and experience of publishing findings in international peer-reviewed journals as lead or senior author
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • experience of working within a multidisciplinary team and an interest in implementation or knowledge mobilisation.

Contract type: Open-ended with funding until 31/03/2026

Work pattern: Part-time/80%/0.8 FTE

Shift pattern: 28 hours per week
