Birmingham City University is a large, vibrant and culturally rich higher education provider based in the heart of the city. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a fulltime Senior Lecturer on our BA (Hons) Filmmaking course within the College of Digital Arts, currently the number one ranked film degree course in the UK. (Guardian League Tables, 2025).
A key focus of the course is the aesthetic and creative aspects of filmmaking, with consideration being given to both mainstream and experimental modes of film creation, as well as how these traditions are mediated by differing production and postproduction techniques. Theoretical and practice-based considerations of filmmaking techniques, as well as a strong focus on employability, remain central to the course’s ethos.
Our course is based at the College of Digital Arts, within the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media (ADM) situated in the Curzon Building in the Eastside area of Birmingham, with easy access to the main transport links which connect the Midlands and beyond. The University has industry-standard filmmaking facilities, which have been hired commercially to the likes of Sony, Disney, Channel 4, Birmingham Royal Ballet and Jaguar Land Rover. Birmingham has a rapidly growing film and television industry and the ideal candidate would be able to feed into and exploit this opportunity.
As a senior academic and the Course Leader, we are seeking to appoint a candidate who is visionary, with high-level creative and technical practice, and extensive experience of teaching filmmaking at university level. The post-holder will be expected to understand the film industry’s ever-changing landscape and prepare graduates for exciting opportunities within this growing sector. The successful candidate will lead a staff team and, therefore, line management experience would be advantageous.
Candidates should possess a record of experience within the film industry and, ideally, a research profile. They should be conversant with film technology, practice, theory and concepts, including directing, cinematography, sound, editing, conceptual problem solving, studio production and research.
They will have the ability to teach across all levels of the course as well as leading on programme development. The successful candidate will ideally possess a teaching qualification and/or HEA Fellowship.
In return we offer a generous pension and annual leave provision (40 days including statutory holidays), family-friendly policies and state-of-the-art campus facilities.
