Hourly Paid Lecturer in Academic Study Skills / English Language Support

Fixed Term for 2 years in the first instance

Salary: £41.92 per hour plus a holiday entitlement of 18.03%

The Institute of Inner-City Learning is seeking to appoint an Hourly Paid Lecturer in Academic Study Skills/English Language Support at its London Campus. The primary delivery mode is face-to-face on campus.

THE ROLE

The post holder will be required to design and teach a range of different modules across various programmes, primarily (but not exclusively) focussed on providing English Language and Academic Skills Development & Support. The role may include a weekend delivery.

The post holder will deliver teaching in a variety of learning environments using a variety of teaching styles and approaches, at all levels, including at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The post holder will offer both academic and pastoral feedback & support to students, and facilitate the ongoing enhancement of the student experience. We have a particular emphasis on widening participation in our programmes.

The post holder will also make a positive contribution to other day-to-day activities that may cover areas such as student recruitment, marketing activities, research seminars and workshops, research publications, staff training and professional development. 

Main duties will include:

  • Deliver teaching, learning and assessments for relevant Modules, and provide necessary support to students at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level of study, either individually or as a member of a teaching team.
  • Design and deliver bespoke Workshops and Tutorials to enhance the English Language and Writing skills of the students, enabling them to improve their Academic Skills and performance in Assessments, as also English communication in general.
  • Teach effectively in a variety of learnings settings including seminar & small group tutorials to large lectures and workshops, using appropriate and engaging teaching styles, within an established programme
  • Design and develop teaching materials, assessment methods and criteria for relevant modules with a clear awareness and understanding of relevant quality assurance requirements.
  • Supervise the work of students in a timely, professional and supportive manner, providing necessary advice on study skills, assessment and dissertation work.
  • Offer appropriate advice, feedback, support, and encouragement to students, in both an academic and personal tutor role, to ensure a high-quality student experience.
  • Undertake appropriate administrative tasks to ensure the effective operations and management of the curriculum and, at the request of the line manager, undertake additional administrative roles such as student Admissions, involvement in Marketing and Open day initiatives.
  • Undertake relevant scholarly activity, either as part of a collaborative project or individually, as a means of updating knowledge in an appropriate specialism and underpinning effective learning and teaching.
  • Be an active and enthusiastic member of the team and the Institute, working collaboratively with colleagues, participating in school boards and staff-student committees, Faculty working groups and committees, and make a positive contribution to the Institute’s overall culture and environment.
  • Engage in continuing professional development and enhancement through, for example, gaining membership of the Higher Education Academy, through relevant University staff development or through membership of a relevant professional body.

REQUIREMENTS

You should have:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline
  • TESOL/CELTA or other English teaching qualification
  • Experience in teaching English for Academic Purposes and/or English Language Support in a HE setting
  • Experience in the design and development of module content, lecture materials, Workshop design & materials, and Assessment methods
  • Experience in provision of pastoral and tutorial support to the students
  • Demonstrable organisational and personal management skills
  • Demonstrable interpersonal and communication skills with evidence of a commitment to team working
  • IT proficiency and experience of using e-resources including a willingness to teach by video-link, VLE, e-mail or website delivery
  • Evidence of ability to balance competing pressures of teaching, scholarship, research, administrative demands and deadlines 

It would also be beneficial if you had:

  • Membership of a relevant professional body or teaching qualification
