We have two vacancies for post-doctoral research associates to work on the Computer Science side of an interdisciplinary project on ‘Navigation of Chemical Space for Function’, funded through an EPSRC Programme Grant. The research associates will contribute to developing a digital discovery platform that blends machine learning and explainable symbolic AI reasoning methods from computer science with physical science synthesis, measurement, computation and robotics capability. The work will accelerate the discovery of materials in the laboratory through the contribution of fundamental computer science. This project is led by the University of Liverpool and involves collaborators at the Departments of Chemistry at the University of Southampton and Imperial College London.

The ideal candidates will embrace interdisciplinary research and have a PhD in computer science (or a closely related subject) and experience (plus publications) in some field of explainable AI, such as Satisfiability checking, Satisfiability Modulo Theories, Optimisation Modulo Theories or constraint satisfaction. We will also consider candidates from related fields like verification, argumentation, and knowledge representation.

1 fixed term post, available until 30th November 2026.

1 fixed term post, available for 15 months.

If you are still awaiting your PhD to be awarded you will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that you have been awarded your PhD, your salary will be increased to Grade 7, spine point 31.
