Research Assistant in the Human Impact of Building Motion

University of Bath - Architecture & Civil Engineering

Location: Bath
Salary: £30,505 to £36,924 Grade 6, per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 2nd December 2024

Job Ref: FM12252

Are you a motivated and adaptable individual, excited to contribute to innovative research in a collaborative and supportive environment?

About the role

We are seeking a Research Assistant to join us in exploring the human impact of building motion.

This interdisciplinary project addresses the urgent need to make tall buildings more sustainable by reducing material use and carbon emissions without compromising occupant comfort.

The project will, for the first time, provide actionable insights into the physiological and psychological impacts of building motion. These findings will be translated into design guidelines to help the construction industry create more efficient, lower-carbon structures that prioritize occupant well-being.

The research is conducted at the University of Bath’s pioneering VSimulators facility, which uses virtual reality and a moving hydraulic platform to simulate building sway under lifelike conditions.

Role highlights:

  • Your contributions will help create sustainable, low-carbon tall buildings that prioritise occupant comfort and safety.
  • Build skills in physiological testing, data monitoring, and participant management. This role offers an excellent platform for careers in research, academia, or industry innovation.
  • You'll gain experience with advanced experimental simulation techniques including virtual reality, simulated sway motion and environmental control.
  • Partner with experts in structural engineering, physiology, and psychology from Bath, Exeter, Cardiff, and Swansea to produce actionable design guidelines for the construction industry.

This post is full time for 21 months from 3 March 2025.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have the following skills, attributes, and experience:

  • A degree, or equivalent qualification, in human physiology, kinesiology, sport science, or a closely related field.
  • Hands-on experience in collecting, processing, and analysing physiological data, such as: Electromyography (EMG), Reaction forces, Accelerometry, Electrooculography (EOG), Photoplethysmography (PPG), Electrodermal activity (EDA).
  • Highly motivated and eager to contribute to an interdisciplinary project with real-world impact.
  • Organised and detail-oriented, with excellent time management skills.
  • A team player who thrives in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment, while also being comfortable working independently.
  • A strong communicator who can manage participant interactions and maintain clear documentation.
  • Enthusiastic about learning new skills and adapting to innovative research methods and technologies.

Experience working in a research environment is desirable but not essential.

We encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. If you meet the essential requirements and are excited about the role, we want to hear from you.
