Overview of the role:

We are seeking a Research Administration Officer (Molecular Neurodegeneration Laboratory) to join our Research Awards team. The ideal candidate will independently manage and prioritise their workload, communicate confidently with the team and research group, and ideally have experience of processing grant applications and managing grant awards.

This role involves providing researchers with administrative support, in the preparation, costing and submission of Research Applications, and managing awarded grants in the Wade-Martins group and (occasionally) elsewhere in the department. This post is available as a maternity cover contract from mid-February 2025 for 12 months or the actual return of the substantive postholder, whichever is earliest.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide Pre-Award support and advice to Principal Investigators throughout the application process, ensuring all grant applications comply with funder rules and requirements (budget, application elements and attachments, eligibility etc.)
  • Prepare financial costings for grant applications and other bids using the University’s costings tool (X5) and liaise with Research Services
  • Report to the Research Facilitation & Administration Manager any HR issues, any matching or underwrites required/requested in the application and any potential additional space requirements
  • Meet routinely with the Principal Investigators to review their financial position, addressing any expenditure issues on projects whilst maintaining the auditable standards on the project
  • Coordinate data for reports and audits on research awards, liaising with Research Accounts

Selection criteria:

  • Educated to A-Level standard or equivalent
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to produce clear and persuasive communications
  • Experience of managing projects and handling a varied workload
  • Organised and calm under pressure with the ability to meet deadlines
  • Experience of working with budgets
  • Ideally, recent experience with financial software (preferably Oracle Financials), and the University’s costing tool (X5)
