The role

Our School of Biosciences and Chemistry is looking to recruit a Lecturer in Biochemistry and Analytical Science to deliver research-informed teaching across our undergraduate and postgraduate, bioscience and chemistry programmes, including our foundation year.

You will be an enthusiastic and committed individual, who can contribute towards the current portfolio and create a vibrant, engaging learning experience for our students. Your role will involve all aspects of learning, teaching and assessment, including preparation, lecturing, tutorials and assessment, as well as teaching of laboratory classes.

You should have a PhD and/or professional experience as a scientist in the biochemical and/or chemistry academia or industrial science sector.

We are especially keen to hear from you if you can teach:

  • A broad range of biochemistry (e.g. protein structure and function, enzymology, glycobiology/carbohydrates) and analytical sciences (e.g. HPLC, GLC, mass spectrometry, spectroscopy).
  • A wide range of other areas relevant to our degree programmes, such as numeracy, basic statistics, specific laboratory techniques, academic and research skills

The School of Biosciences and Chemistry

The School provides courses in applied biological and chemical sciences, all delivered in a supportive, research informed environment.

We have an excellent reputation for teaching.Our research is aimed at increasing the understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of health and disease and its application to diagnosis, monitoring and treatment.

We also excel in the application of analytical techniques to pharmaceutical, environmental and materials chemistry.

The University has invested significantly in new laboratory equipment for teaching and research in recent years. Our chemistry facilities have been further enhanced following the award of £5m from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) match-funded by the University, to create new facilities for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) provision, including an additional chemistry laboratory and a publicly accessible environment as a resource for nurturing enterprising, work-ready students.

Considerable investment using both internal and external funding has provided a broad range of facilities including:

  • State of the art suite of mass spectrometers to deliver ion mobility
  • Mass spectrometry and Q- TOF mass spectrometer with electrospray and imaging MALDI options
  • Liquid Chromatography and associated equipment for proteomic analysis
  • Gas Chromatography including GC-MS
  • ICP-MS and ICP-OES
  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy
  • Suite of laboratories fully equipped with facilities necessary for synthetic chemistry including Schlenk lines and glove box
  • Dedicted High-Performance Computing Cluster
  • Cell culture facilities for bacterial and mammalian cells
  • Flow cytometer with cell sorter
  • Confocal microscopy suite
  • DNA microarray scanner
  • Real time PCR
