Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £46,485 to £55,295 with potential progression once in post to £62,098.

Brief Job Ddescription

  • Lead and manage the Pension team to ensure the provision of an effective, accurate and responsive service aligned to customer requirements and statutory obligations
  • Plan and organise the broader work of the pensions team in support of wider HR projects, system changes, and organisation change. Acting as a point of escalation and dealing with complex individual scenarios.
  • Provide direction in the governance and delivery of all the pensions schemes including the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), NHS, GPP (Legal & General Master Trust) and the defined benefit Birmingham Pension Scheme (BPAS) in conjunction with the scheme administrators. 
  • Identify process improvements and efficiencies supporting system development, as required and lead on their implementation.
  • Ensure effective communication channels are in place both within the team and with the university generally in relation to pension matters.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with partners, suppliers, external organisations and bodies.
  • Liaise with the University Benefits/Pension providers on pension and employee reward matters and disseminate information to managers and staff within the university. 

Person specification

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification plus substantial work experience in pension roles.
  • Demonstrable experience of leading, motivating and developing teams.
  • Significant and advanced technical expertise in pensions.
  • Ability to exercise a substantial degree of independent professional responsibility and discretion. Experience of working in partnership with senior decision-makers with demonstrable success of building good relationships and partnerships with key influencers.
  • Up to date knowledge of UK pensions, tax and employment law (as relevant) and best practice approaches in these areas. 
  • Proven capabilities as a people manager, with a flexible and inclusive management style.
  • Strong customer and delivery focus, with the ability to manage a service to deliver to tight deadlines. 
  • Highly proficient IT skills, including the MS Office suite. You should be confident and able to quickly learn new IT skills and software packages as required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical pension information in clear, well-structured reports and briefs.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied within own business area and organisation wide
  • Excellent planning organisation and analytical skills, including managing change and improvement projects
