AWERB Coordinator

University of Cambridge - Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £33,232 to £39,105 per annum
Hours: Full Time, Part Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 25th November 2024
Closes: 2nd January 2025
Job Ref: SW44185

We are seeking a highly organised and empathetic individual to support and work alongside the  Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute's (CI) Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB). As a unique department of the University of Cambridge we hold our own Home Office Establishment Licence. This legal autonomy requires us to have an independent AWERB which seeks to deliver on its ambition as an enabler of high-quality ethical research.

The AWERB works in collaboration with our researchers as they investigate the basic physiological processes and mechanisms underlying cancer as well as potential therapeutic approaches.  Research at the Institute involving mice takes place where there is no alternative, enabling us to accurately model these processes, mechanisms and potential therapies and is carried out to high welfare standards in accordance with stringent national regulation and our own internal values.

The role will guide and support researchers wishing to apply to the Home Office for a licence to conduct a programme of work in our highly regulated, world-class animal facility.

Key duties include:

  • Responsibility for the organisation of AWERB meetings and ensuring the Institute has effective review processes in place for managing the review of new project applications and ad-hoc amendment requests.
  • Guiding new applicants through a timely review process, providing high-quality advice, ensuring a positive researcher experience.
  • Driving the delivery of the output of the AWERB communication strategy ensuring that relevant information is shared effectively.
  • Ensuring that the AWERB fulfils all its required functions and tasks.

This is a full-time role but for the right candidate we would welcome applications from candidates who wish to work flexibly (min 25 hours a week).

Successful candidates will have advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint and Teams) and be able to demonstrate experience of successful process management. We are looking for a highly organised, pro-active individual with a positive, professional manner and a keen eye for detail. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to deal tactfully and confidently with people at all levels to gain their confidence. The role holder will be an effective team player but will also demonstrate the ability to work individually with minimal supervision.

The role holder must gain a sound knowledge of, and remain up to date with, current ASPA legislative guidance, developments in the ASPeL online licensing system and published best practices. Previous experience of working in these areas would be highly advantageous. A high regard for animal welfare is essential.

The Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute (CI), a department of the University of Cambridge, aims to link the laboratory to the clinic carrying out cancer research of direct relevance to patients. We aim to save more lives by detecting, controlling and curing cancer.  Our science holds the solution.   We welcome your application to be part of that solution.

Please ensure that you outline how you match the criteria for the post and why you are applying for this role on the online Application form.

Please include details of your referees, including email address and phone number, one of which must be your most recent line manager.

The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.
