Project description:

Project Overview:

Join the Smart Electronic Materials and Systems research group at the University of Southampton and become part of a fully funded PhD project that not only pushes the boundaries of electromagnetic metasurfaces for wave engineering but also emphasizes strong industrial collaborations and commercialization potential. We're seeking an exceptional candidate to contribute to our groundbreaking project led by Dr. Taravati. Dr. Taravati has extensive experience in electromagnetics, active and space-time-modulated metasurfaces and their applications to wireless communications, biomedicine, and quantum computing at the University of Oxford, University of Toronto, University of Montreal, Concordia University, and University of Southampton. Additionally, he has successfully established a spinout company in Canada specializing in active metasurfaces for advanced wave processing in telecommunication systems.

Our project focuses on advancing the frontiers of active and polychromatic metasurfaces and metamaterials by exploring the theoretical, simulation, and experimental implications of space-time modulation. These reconfigurable surfaces modulate their refractive index in time through the spatiotemporal variations of varactors, Josephson junctions, or transistors. We aim to investigate novel methods for dynamic wave control and manipulation, enabling transformative applications in wireless communications, quantum technologies, and beyond.

In addition to the training and networking opportunities offered through the CDT, you will join the multi-disciplinary diverse team of Smart Electronic Materials and Systems in the ECS and will be trained to work independently in the world-class Zepler clean room facilities in close collaboration with the Optoelectronics Research Centre.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact:

Dr. Sajjad Taravati, SEMS research group, Email: s.taravati@soton.ac.uk.

Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date:

Applications should be received no later than 31 December 2024 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: We offer a range of funding opportunities for both UK and international students, including Bursaries and Scholarships.
