MA by Research/PHD/PHD BY PUBLICATION STUDENTSHIPS IN ENGLISH LITERATURE, English language, or Creative Writing AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE (CHELTENHAM) START DATE: FEBRUARY 2025

University of Gloucestershire is offering TWO full-time (or four part-time) MA by Research or PhD studentships in English Literature, English Language, or Creative Writing. 

The studentship covers 100% of home fees for one year of FULL-TIME study only. In subsequent years candidates will have to pay full fees. Start date is February 2025.

Applications are invited from students interested in pursuing research topics across a range of themes matching staff interests, including (but not limited to): 

  • Genre fiction (crime fiction, speculative fiction, children’s/YA literature
  • Poetry (creative writing)
  • LGBTQ+ and/or postcolonial perspectives
  • 18th Century literature, Victorian literature, 20th-21stC literature
  • Ecolinguistics
  • PhD by publication

You will be supervised by experienced published academics who have supervised MAs and PhDs to completion. 

The studentship is an exciting opportunity to undertake an original research project. Successful applicant(s) will be based at the University of Gloucestershire’s Francis Close Hall Campus. You will be part of a stimulating research student environment and the vibrant outward-looking School of Creative Arts. 

Applicants for MA by Research must have a BA (Hons) in English, English Literature, or Creative Writing (at least 2:1 standard or equivalent).  PhD applicants must hold an MA in a relevant subject. A demonstrable interest in the named research topics is an advantage.

Applicants for PhD by publication will be required to submit a substantial book length portfolio of work from your publications alongside an exegesis reflecting on your original contribution to knowledge. Self-published material is not eligible. Further information on this route is available by enquiry.

Selection process:     Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview (to be held online), date to be confirmed but likely to be in January 25.
