The School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham is a vibrant and thriving academic community with over 80 academic and research staff, 20 professional services staff and over 600 students. With a strong focus on its three main research themes, energy, sustainability and health, and a number of interdisciplinary interest groups, the school has ambitious plans to grow research activity; combined with investment from the University for the new Collaborative Teaching Laboratory (opened September 2018) and Molecular Sciences Research Building (opened in 2024), we are entering an exciting period.

Advertised is a research fellow position in the Friščić group, pioneering the development and understanding of mechanochemistry and other types of solid-state reactivity, aimed towards the discovery and development of greener chemical transformations, based on mechanochemistry. 

Appointee will be ambitious, enthusiastic, with experience in green chemistry and mechanochemistry, and with a desire to learn, and will work closely with the PI and other team members, in a group that values diversity, international character, and collaborates extensively with academia and industry.

You will be developing experimental techniques for mechanochemical and solventless transformations of organic and main group molecules. Experience in organic synthesis, catalysis, and mechanochemistry, as well as characterisation methods based on spectroscopy, diffraction, and other solid-state methods is required. Preference given to candidates with a demonstrated track record in green chemistry, synthesis, catalysis and supramolecular chemistry, with industry experience.

  • Contribute to generating funding 

Main Duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of the PI as a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding

Person Specification

  • Have a Ph.D. (or one near to completion) in an area relevant to research
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
