About the Role

Leeds City College are recruiting three Learning Support Assistants to join our team:

We are looking for individuals who are highly motivated, independent, supportive and understanding and who are willing to learn and cooperate to meet the needs of the students. You will be based predominantly at one of our campuses but could be required to work across sites depending on the needs of our students. All of our sites are within a short travelling distance from the city centre.

The SEND Provision across Leeds City College offer a range of high-quality services to meet the needs of our students. The department works across the college with a wide variety of students aged between 16 and 25 who have a range of additional needs. As a Learning Support Assistant, you will be instrumental in supporting and encouraging our students to succeed.

Our Learning Support Assistants are an essential part of our SEND Provision. You will be working with a supportive team of around 70 professionals across the College who all have a passion for ensuring our students can achieve - no matter their background or ability. This role is perfect for anyone wanting to gain an entry level insight into working with students who have additional high level or SEND needs, those wanting to transition into teaching and who also want to progress through the SEND Pathway. You will have the opportunity to progress internally from this role either into our Teaching Apprenticeships, Specialist Learning Support Assistant Roles or work towards becoming a SEND Team Leader.

What You Will Do
  • To be involved in planning and preparation and assessment of learning as part of the curriculum team.
  • Providing in and out of class support to meet identified needs of students who have High Needs.
  • Providing curriculum teachers/assessors and SEND team members with verbal and written reports on students who have High Needs or SEND and feedback against strategies used and progress towards outcomes on the EHCP.
  • Assisting with emergency evacuation plans and practices, and helping with all emergency evacuations.
  • Attend annual reviews as requested and attend student meetings as required to update on progress and behaviours.
  • There may be a requirement to be involved in learners’ transport arrangements and helping students who have High Needs to develop independent travel skills where needed.
  • At the direction of the teacher/assessor, assist students with their individual personal care, medical and mobility requirements excursions related to the programme of learning.
  • Assist with personal care and medical requirements as necessary. Support students who are less mobile and may use wheelchairs.
About You
  • Educated to Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy or a commitment to achieving this within one year of appointment
  • Experience of working within a team who support SEND or high needs students to support their learning through identifying strategies and preparing young people for adulthood.
  • Strong Awareness of disability issues and equality and diversity issues.
  • Able to work effectively as a team member and being able to adapt and embrace change.
  • A willingness to be flexible and mobile as the role requires working across the college campuses and off-site visits with learners.
