Research Associate in mmWave RF Sensing and Machine Learning

Imperial College London - Faculty of Engineering

Location: London
Salary: £43,003 to £56,345 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 18th November 2024
Closes: 28th December 2024
Job Ref: ENG03344

About the role:

We are seeking to hire a Research Associate (Post-Doc) to join the EPSRC funded IntentMAPS: Anticipating Intent facilitated by Multi-scale Adaptive Passive RF Sensing Project. This project aims to carry out Human Activity monitoring at scale in complex environments.

What you would be doing:

This project aims to combine mmWave RF Sensing, enhanced using Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (aka IRC) and machine learning to better understand human pose, gesture and activity recognition. The work aims to build proofs of concept demonstrations of the technology in challenging situations. The research will involve building demonstrations of such systems, but this is driven from the fundamental theoretical knowledge that underpin them.

You will be co-creating new models, algorithms and schemes to advance the field of joint sensing and communications for 6G telecoms and way beyond.

What we are looking for:

It will be expected that the candidate will have a PhD in a Communications field (from Electrical and Electronics Engineering or Computer Science) that demonstrates knowledge of the spectrum of the subject from theory to practical implementation.

You will have had experience working in an area pertinent to IntentMAPs, i.e. in Artificial Intelligence and RF sensing with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces to carry out Human Activity, Gesture and Pose Recognition research.

You will have experience in publishing research in leading conferences and journals.

You will demonstrate the ability to build proofs-of-concept of such systems and have a practical understanding of:

  • Signal processing algorithms,
  • Channel modelling
  • Antennas and RF sensing
  • Machine learning for communications systems
  • Machine Learning for human activity classification and pose determination.

You will enjoy adventure in research, broadening your knowledge and trying new things.

See job description for full list of requirements.

*Candidates who not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be hired at Research Assistant level: salary scale £43,003 - £46,297 per annum.

What we can offer you:

Professor McCann is the PI of this EPSRC funded project. The position of the IntentMAPs Research Associate presents a novel opportunity to work alongside Professor McCann and her UK wide collaborative team. IntentMAPs is a close collaboration of academics and researchers from Imperial, Loughborough, Cambridge, Sussex, Brunel and Manchester Metropolitan Universities as well as partners from industry and government stakeholders.

You will have the opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution. Imperial College is consistently in the top 10 world university rankings with the Department of Computing ranked top of the 2021 UK REF assessment. McCann’s Adaptive Emergent Systems Engineering Group (AESE) at Imperial recently won the 2020 President’s Medal for Outstanding Research.

You will receive a sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 38 days off a year) and a comprehensive early career development support package including 10 training and development days.

Further Information

Full-time, Fixed term contract for 18 months, to start January 2025.

Successful candidates will be expected to pass a security check.

In addition to completing the online application candidates should attach:
