Applications are invited for up to two temporary Design Teaching Fellows in the Department of Architecture. The purpose of these posts are to teach architectural design in a first-year undergraduate BA (Architecture Tripos) course, which leads to RIBA/ARB Part I qualification. 

These part-time (0.253FTE) posts are fixed-term from 1 January 2025 until 31 July 2025, or the return of the post holder, whichever is the earlier. 

The vacancies could be filled by two individuals on a part-time basis at 0.253FTE, managing one studio each, or alternatively, the Department would consider combining the posts into one part-time position at 0.506FTE managing two Design Teaching studios. Please specify in your application what your preference is in terms of FTE. The working days for 1st year studios are Mondays and Thursdays, therefore applicants must be able to work on these days. 

The studio team strive to create a supportive and collaborative environment where students can thrive. The focus in first year is on building essential drawing skills and developing confidence in design through an iterative approach. Students are encouraged to explore, analyse and critically examine the contexts and systems that shape our built environment. 

Over the course of the year a Design Fellow will: 

  • Teach up to 9 hours per week during the 9 weeks of term. Studio teachers are expected to attend in Cambridge at least one day a week during term-time.
  • Take part in site visits, up to 12 hours per academic year
  • Assess/examiner students through an end-of-term crit - up to 9 hours for each Design Teaching Fellow each term
  • Take 8 hours per term of Professional Development
  • Attend two departmental away days each academic year
  • Spend 40 hours over the course of the year on preparation work to develop studio teaching. This will include writing briefs, liaising with Director of Studies, arranging external visiting critics, writing termly student reports and liaising with the model making workshop on material requirements for the studio.

The Department does not specify when preparation work takes place, but it is anticipated that any days where attendance is required take place within the c. 10 weeks of school term-time.

Candidates for this role must have: 

  • A BA degree or equivalent first degree in Architecture, Engineering or a cognate discipline, with exemption from Part I of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) or equivalent examinations;
  • Postgraduate Diploma, MSc, MArch, MPhil or equivalent qualification carrying exemption from Part II of the RIBA examinations.
