Are you passionate about Python? Could you explain how to write a short script for handling biological data? Birkbeck, University of London, is currently looking for a Demonstrator to support the teaching course on Biocomputing. This is an excellent opportunity to support the teaching team within the School of Natural Sciences.
As Demonstrator you would support the module:
Programming is an essential skill for bioinformaticians. This module focuses on Python, the most widely-used programming language for bioinformatics, and includes in addition some content on relational database creation and access with SQL.
The module addresses a range of topics, including: how to write short scripts for handling biological data; how to use Biopython to handle DNA and protein sequence data; how to use NumPy, MatPlotLib and Pandas; error handling; basics of object-oriented programming; good programming practices and habits relevant to any programming language; project management and version control with git and GitHub; basic Webservers with python; basics of SQL.
As a Demonstrator, you will assist in the delivery of predetermined programmes of teaching to Birkbeck students, under academic supervision, to facilitate the successful completion of their studies. You should engage in the scholarship necessary to ensure good practice in teaching, and to apply appropriate levels of knowledge.

Remuneration
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £23.96 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6.
