About the role

The Environmental Research Group (ERG), lead by Prof. Frank Kelly, is a world leader in air pollution science, combining air pollution measurement and modelling with toxicology and epidemiology to determine the impacts of air pollution on health and the causal factors.

The primary purpose of this role is to provide technical support for field and laboratory research in the Aerosol Science Team, under the supervision of the Aerosol Science Team Lead and other members of the team.

What you would be doing

  • Day-to-day maintenance of Aerosol Science laboratory and storage facilities for atmospheric research projects, including ensuring correct operation of environmentally controlled systems, maintaining equipment inventory, ordering consumables and scheduling equipment maintenance
  • Preparation and weighing of filters for atmospheric sampling in dedicated laboratory
  • Undertake calibration and basic maintenance of measurement instrumentation in the Aerosol Science Laboratory
  • Undertake laboratory analysis of atmospheric samples for physical and chemical properties using established standard operating procedures
  • Work with members of the Aerosol Science Team to refine protocols and to be responsible for ensuring that the research components of the projects are carried out in a timely and effective way
  • Maintenance of accurate and complete research records.
  • Undertake remote checks on field instrumentation

What are we looking for

  • BSc in Chemistry, biology, environmental, physics, engineering or similar
  • Previous experience in a technical, field or research laboratory environment
  • Basic understanding of atmospheric measurement techniques
  • Good understanding of good laboratory practices, general techniques and instrumentation
  • Good understanding of Health and Safety regulations and procedures
  • Computer literate (MS Office)
  • A meticulous approach and attention to detail
  • Willingness to work as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative

Further Information

This is full time position, fixed term for 2 years

The post will be based at ERG’s brand new office at Sir Michael Uren Hub (White City North campus), but may involve work at other campus's and specific ERG monitoring sites.
