We are seeking a Neuropathology Research Assistant to work on an innovative, large-scale, public-private partnership

About the role

We are seeking a Neuropathology Research Assistant to work on an innovative, large-scale, public-private partnership that will use multiple layers of genomic and state-of-the-art neuropathology data generated on human post-mortem brain tissue for drug target identification and prioritisation.

What you would be doing

The Landmark Project is a public-private partnership funded by Parkinson’s UK in collaboration with a consortium of global Pharma companies. The post offers opportunities to work on an internationally unique, large-scale dataset using cutting edge methods for causal inference and multiomic data integration, as well as opportunities to interact with leading drug development scientists globally.

What we are looking for

  • Candidates must hold a good first degree or equivalent – e.g. BSc / BA in biological sciences or other appropriate discipline, or equivalent vocational qualification and / or equivalent experience in laboratory management
  • Experience in handling human tissues (fresh, frozen, fixed), preferably tissues of the central nervous system (CNS)
  • Experience of sectioning of paraffin embedded tissue blocks, preferably human CNS, and tinctorial and immunohistochemical staining of paraffin sections
  • Experience of cryosectioning and tinctorial and immunohistochemical staining of frozen sections
  • Knowledge of neuroanatomy
  • Knowledge of neuropathology
  • The ability to manage a research project including planning of experimental milestones
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to deal with a wide range of people and manage small teams
  • Ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication
  • Ability to work productively including motivate others to produce a high standard of work
  • Ability to organise own work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to prioritise own work in response to deadlines

What we can offer you

  • The post offers opportunities to work on an internationally unique, large-scale dataset using cutting edge methods for causal inference and multiomic data integration.
  • Opportunities to interact with leading drug development scientists globally
  • A key focus of the research is drug target discovery for Parkinson’s disease (PD), but the research will support target and biomarker discovery across human brain disease broadly.
  • A unique feature of the project is that each brain tissue sample will be linked to quantitative neuropathology, including measures of oligomeric tau and alpha-synuclein levels. We anticipate the generation of scRNA-seq profiles on up to 30 million cells across ~1,000 samples, providing a globally important resource for drug target discovery. The RA will work in a multidisciplinary team consisting of neuropathologists, neurologists, bench scientists, computational biologists and statisticians. The Landmark Project will have an international profile
  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
  • Grow your career: Gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
