The University of Nottingham seeks applications for a Researcher to develop strategies for new repair and added functionalities of aerospace thermal barrier coatings (TBCs): both bondcoat and topcoat.

The researcher will be working in the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) funded REPLENISH (Repair and Evaluation of aerospace Products LinE side, Near wing and In Shop) team at the Rolls-Royce UTC in Manufacturing and On-Wing Technology at the University of Nottingham. The Centre of Excellence in Coatings and Surface Engineering, established in 2021 with multi-million EPSRC funding,  hosts the UK’s only high-power, high-efficiency axial injection Suspension Plasma Spray (SPS) and a mini-combustion flame spray for in-situ deposition with a snake robot with all associated characterisation and test facilities.  This is an exciting new opportunity for the next generation of greener, more efficient aero-engines. The proposed research is leading-edge and expected to lead to high-quality publications and industrial applications, making this an ideal industrial or academic career training opportunity. The researcher will join a vibrant, supportive, world-class research team.

The activities within this work will focus on using SPS and mini-combustion flame spray to develop repair and maintenance strategies for powder and suspension-based coatings,  new composition development with thermocalc for CMAS interaction and development of thermal spraying process parameters to achieve the required performance/properties. The testing would involve furnace thermal cycling, CMAS with burner rig testing, and the development of brand new methods for testing.

Candidates must have an excellent understanding, and preferably direct experience in Thermal Spray or thermal barrier coatings (TBC) or thermocalc.

The initial contract will be for a fixed term of 24 months with the opportunity for extension subject to funding. Hours of work are full time (36.25 hours). Job share arrangements may be considered.

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to (Prof Tanvir Hussain), tel: 0115 951 3795 or email tanvir.hussain @nottingham.ac.uk Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
