Short-term Post-Doctoral Position (9 months) in Economics. You will work in a team of experienced applied microeconomics
researchers. Together we will conduct research using large datasets to answer important policy questions in the economics
of education space.

FTE: 1 (35 hours/week)
Term: Fixed Term (9 months)

The Department of Economics is looking to hire an outstanding and highly motivated Post-Doctoral Researcher to work on a project on the effects of school start deferrals.

This post is an exciting opportunity to work with leading academics at the University of Strathclyde, University of Glasgow, and Queens University Belfast on a project funded through the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Secondary Data Initiative.

The post holder will be working on a project that uses large education datasets to study the effects of school start deferral. The project involves Dr Markus Gehrsitz and Prof Stuart McIntyre of the University of Strathclyde, as well as Prof Graeme Roy at Glasgow University and Dr Daniel Borbely at Queens University Belfast. The aim of the project is to leverage large datasets provided by the Scottish Government to analyse the effects of school start deferral on a variety of outcomes such as: attainment, qualifications, post-graduation destinations, health and wellbeing, absences and exclusions, and attitudes towards learning. The work builds on work the research team has been doing with similar data which has produced both research publications in internationally excellent journals and research impact.

As a Research Associate, under the general guidance of the above research leaders, you will develop research objectives and proposals, play a lead role in relation to the broader project and conduct individual and/or collaborative research. A key responsibility will be to provide research assistance for data cleaning, data processing, and data analysis. You will also write up research work for publication, individually or in collaboration with colleagues, and disseminate the results via peer-reviewed journal publications and presentations at conferences.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of PhD level in an appropriate discipline, i.e. Economics, Statistics, Data Science, etc., or have significant relevant experience in addition to a relevant degree. You will have sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in econometrics, ideally in quasi-experimental methods such as regression discontinuity designs and the differences-in-differences method. Other requirements are experience in Stata and a developing ability to conduct individual research work, to disseminate results and to prepare research proposals.

You will have an ability to plan and organise your own workload effectively and an ability to work within a team environment. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.

Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Markus Gehrsitz, Reader (markus.gehrsitz@strath.ac.uk).

Formal interviews for this post will be held on 16/12/2024.
