Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Work with the Institute for Future Cities to improve the quality of human life across the world - tackling climate change, delivering liveable cities, improving health, and reducing poverty. As Urban Futures Research Fellow you will create and lead research that tackles major urban challenges and makes a positive difference for the world.

Term: Fixed Term (3 years)

Are you passionate about making cities of the future better places to live – delivering on global sustainability goals, and making cities more resilient to the major challenges they face? Do you share our desire to improve the quality of life of citizens globally and to address social and economic inequalities - delivering on UN Sustainable Development Goals?

We are looking for an experienced, creative researcher to join the University’s Institute for Future Cities (https://www.strath.ac.uk/cities). As a cross-disciplinary research centre located within the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences we deliver leading research and drive forward innovative solutions for cities. We work collaboratively with cities around the world, commercial organisations, governments, communities and citizens to create sustainable and resilient urban systems, improve wellbeing and health of citizens, and help reduce economic inequalities in cities.

This role will help meet our aspirations to tackle the major economic, environmental and social challenges faced by cities. You will identify and understand challenges for cities across the world, build partnerships to help address their challenges, drive forward research to enhance understanding of the issues, and research and develop potential solutions - collaborating with local partners to ensure more equitable delivery of benefits.

As our Urban Futures Research Fellow, you will be an integral part of our management team - engaging as an independent researcher on collaborative cross-disciplinary research projects. You will assist in applying for future research funding and will be a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator on Institute research projects. You will assist in developing knowledge exchange and policy briefings to ensure that the Institute’s research has a strong, positive impact that makes a difference to people’s lives in cities.

The role will suit candidates who have a PhD (or equivalent professional experience) in a relevant social science discipline and who can demonstrate an ability to generate research and impact in urban environments. Experience in applying for and managing grants is desirable, and you need to have a good record of participating in and developing networks to foster research collaboration and team building.

The role offers opportunity for international engagement, and significant opportunities to develop your skills, experience and professional profile in a wide range of international inter-disciplinary research and policy contexts.

The appointment is for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

Formal interviews for this post will be held on 10/12/2024.

Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Richard Bellingham, Director, Institute for Future Cities (richard.bellingham@strath.ac.uk).
