Research Fellow

Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £35,880 to £45,163 with potential progression once in post to £47,874. Grade: 7

Hours: Part Time (18.75 working hours per week)

Contract Type: Fixed Term contract up to December 2027

Job Summary

This is a joint research project between the University of Birmingham and the rights-based organisation, Changing Our Lives. Some 2,000 people with learning disabilities and autistic people are patients in hospital/secure settings, often for many years with no sense of when they might be able to leave. Lots of people are trying to help them come out of hospital and lead more ordinary lives. However, we know little about:

• What happens to people when they leave hospital
• What types of support help them to stay healthy and well 

At the end of the project, we will know more about people’s journeys and experiences after hospital, and about what sorts of support help people lead ordinary lives in the community. We will use this information to produce a series of policy and practice materials for people, families, practitioners and policy makers – including a linked art exhibition and billboard campaign to raise these issues with the public.

Main Responsibilities

• Collect and analyse data
• Work as a full member of the research team
• Manage own workload on a day-to-day basis (with support) and contribute to the planning and organising of the research project
• Contributing to the development of policy, practice and academic outputs

Person Specification

• First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
• High level analytical capability
• Ability to communicate complex information clearly
• Experience of health and social care research (or relevant transferable skills and experience) and ability to apply these skills in working on a project around the care and support needs of people with learning disabilities leaving ‘long-stay’ hospital settings
• Fluency in relevant research skills
• Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
• Manage own workload on a day-to-day basis (with support) and contribute to the planning and organising of the research project
• Plan and co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
• Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
